The Liuqiu Marine Station was originally an inspection office that was later renovated by the Southern Branch of the Coast Guard Administration. Located on the Liuqiu Island in Pingtung County, it is Taiwan’s only island marine station. As Liuqiu Island is a coral reef island rich in ecological resources and an important habitat for sea turtles, the station adopts sea turtles as the theme of its exhibition halls to promote the concepts of “marine conservation and education” and “marine recreational safety.” It also reminds the public of the importance of protecting marine life and caring for the marine environment to facilitate sustainable marine ecosystems.

The pygmy seahorse is an extremely small species of seahorse, measuring only about 2–3 centimeters in length. They inhabit the surfaces of fan-shaped gorgonian corals. As of today, four species of pygmy seahorses have been discovered in Taiwan, with Kenting, Green Island, Orchid Island, and the eastern and southern waters of Taiwan being the primary locations where they are found.
