Tilapia (African carp)

吳郭魚
Tilapia is a foreign species. Originally from central and south America, Africa and India and a few more places, it was introduced by Mr. Wu Chenhui and Kuo Chichang in 1949 from Indonesia to Taiwan. Hence it is also called “wukuo fish” today. Tilapia fish have mated with a few different local species here. Now they are found in rivers, swamps and ponds throughout Taiwan. Tilapias are known for their black round back spots. They like to lay their eggs in self-made plate-shaped dents.
