Protecting Baby Sea Turtles – Beach Clean-up Relay Competition

8
In an ongoing effort to promote responsible tourism and marine conservation, beach clean-up activities were held at Duzaiping and Beauty Cave Beach in Xiaoliuqiu. The events attracted numerous tourists and local residents who came together to clear the paths for baby sea turtles about to hatch and make their way home to the ocean.

These two beaches are critical nesting habitats for mother sea turtles. Thus, to provide a clean and safe environment for hatching, the “Show Love for Sea Turtles: Beach Clean-up Competition” specifically selected these locations for focused clean-up efforts, removing marine debris and other obstacles that could hinder the baby sea turtles’ journeys.

At the Beauty Cave Beach clean-up event, Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area Headquarters Director Wang Wen-chieh personally led the clean-up, demonstrating the government’s commitment to the care of tourist destinations and encouraging visitors to take direct actions in environmental protection. Through cross-sector collaboration with organizations such as non-governmental associations, the Ocean Conservation Administration, the Pingtung County Government, and the Liuqiu Township Office, the event helped instill conservation awareness, which is an essential step toward achieving sustainable tourism.

With the clean-up activities successfully completed, Xiaoliuqiu is now entering sea turtle hatching season. The Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area Headquarters urges visitors to avoid the beaches at night to prevent disturbing the turtles’ reproductive activities; and to reduce waste during their stay. By practicing responsible tourism, we can provide every baby sea turtle the opportunity to find its way safely back to the sea.
